200Gig Laptop Harddisk In 2007

Thursday 28 April 2005 @ 2:38 am

How many Gig is your current laptop harddisk? Feel not enough space to store your songs, anime and movies?

Anyway, Fujitsu is planning to sell 2.5-inch hard drives for laptop with a capacity of 200GB in the first half of 2007.

Fujitsu current largest capacity for laptop 2.5-inch harddisk drives is 120Gig. Their going-to-be-launch 200Gig drives, intended for use in notebook PCs, will consist of two disk platters that will store up to 100Gig each, for a total of up to 200Gig.

The higher capacity will be achieved through the use of perpendicular recording technology in the new disks, Fujitsu says.

Perpendicular recording is a method of storing information using magnetic fields to represent each bit. In disks that are commercially available today, the bits, or magnetic fields, lay flat on the disk surface. In drives using perpendicular recording, the bits stand upright. Because they take less space, more bits can be packed on the disk, and so more recording capacity is available.

What Probably Be Google’s Next Step ?

Thursday 28 April 2005 @ 2:21 am

Well, we have seen all sorts innovative ideas from Google like Google AdSense, Google AdWord, Google Maps, etc. They have now conquered the Internet. So, what probably be Google’s next step?

Google

An article from Softpedia suggested some products with high probability that will be launched by Google.
Here is the list (I arrange it according to the likelihood of launching the product):-

  • Google services for cell phones – Probability: 100%
  • Better advertising services – Probability: 100%
  • Local services – Probability: 95%
  • New Google services for users – Probability: 90%
  • G Messenger – Probability: 90%
  • CRM/ERP type software – Probability: 75%
  • Video content distribution – Probability: 65%
  • G Browser – Probability: 50%

Personally, I think other than those with 100%, G Messenger and G Browser have very high chances to be launched sooner or later.

Better Internet Explorer Soon !!

Wednesday 27 April 2005 @ 12:29 pm

Microsoft has confirmed that Internet Explorer 7.0, due for beta this summer, will include improved support for two key Web standards – Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and PNG graphics.

I definitely think this is a great news for each and every Internet user because Internet Explorer (IE) is always the culprit for poor Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and PNG graphics support for the past few years. If you are using IE to view this blog, you’ll notice in the YaGoohoo!gle !! post, the picture background is gray in colour, whereas if you are using any other browser like Firefox and Opera, the background of that picture is actually transparent. This is due to the lack of support in PNG graphics by IE. Hope to see this problem sorted out when Microsoft launch the long-awaiting IE7.0 soon.

In a post to the MSDN IEBlog Web log on Friday, lead program manager Chris Wilson confirmed improvements to CSS and PNG support are on the way. “Our first and most important goal with our Cascading Style Sheet support is to remove the major inconsistencies so that Web developers have a consistent set of functionality on which they can rely,” he wrote.

PNG images will get alpha channel support, he said, allowing for transparent images and image overlays. “We’ve actually had this on our radar for a long time, and have had it supported in the code for a while now. We have certainly heard the clear feedback from the web design community that per-pixel alpha is a really important feature,” Wilson wrote.

As for the CSS support, Some developers were sceptical that IE would pass a CSS compliance test known as Acid2. I have just tested recent versions of browsers such as Firefox 1.0.3 and Opera 7.54, and they both failed the test.

Anyway, I cannot be bias to any browser in CSS support, though Firefox is always my first choice for time being.
Let’s hope this CSS compliant problem can be sorted out in all web browsers. :)

64-bit Windows Launched !!

Tuesday 26 April 2005 @ 12:16 pm

64-bit Windows
As a 64-bit enabled user, I’m so glad finally home-use Windows OS has entered 64-bit computing !!

At WinHEC 2005, Microsoft announced it is finally ready to bring 64-bit computing to the mainstream and is shipping x64 editions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The 64-bit versions of Windows were released to manufacturing in late March and will now be available from PC vendors.

However these 2 64-bit OS will not be sold on retail shelves, it will be only as an option for manufacturers selling PCs like Dell and HP, with 64-bit processors from AMD and soon Intel.

64-bit OS will still run 32-bit application like what we all are using today. So, no worries about incompatibility. :) Microsoft expects 64-bit computers to make up a significant number of PCs that ship next year.

However, the current application market still lack of 64-bit applications, even Microsoft’s own 64-bit capable programming environment, Visual Studio 2005, is still in beta at the moment. Once all the programming compilers turn into 64-bit, I’m sure programming compiling will not take as long time as we are suffering now. :)

USD$10,000 For An Electronics Magazine !

Monday 25 April 2005 @ 2:48 pm

April 11, 2005, Intel posted a search in eBay for a 1965 copy of Electronics Magazine that featured Intel co-founder Gordon Moore’s thoughts on how silicon technology would evolve. Whoever is willing to sell that magazine to Intel will be awarded USD$10,000.

The issue contained an article by Moore that described how the number of components on integrated circuits was doubling every year. The article became the foundation for Moore’s famed dictum, which has been a favorite maxim of the IT industry for decades. Electronics Magazine went out of business several years ago, though, and copies are scarce.

One day after Intel posting that offer on eBay, David Clark, an engineer in Surrey, England, quickly sent a photo of the well-preserved copy of that issue and response off to eBay. So as promised by Intel, Clark has reaped the chip giant’s $10,000 by selling the magazine to Intel.
