After we have seen Opera came out with their mobile version of Opera 8, which can be run on Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphones. Mozilla Foundation has released a technology preview of a mobile device browser, codenamed Mimimo ( Sounds like Minime? :D ) that uses the same code base as the popular desktop Firefox browser. For your information desktop based Firefox has surpassed 75 million downloads to date.
Quoted:
The Minimo (Mini Mozilla) project is focused on code-size and runtime footprint reduction, and porting to small consumer devices. We hope to make Minimo the browser of choice on small devices, or machines with limited system resources
Minimo 0.007 is for mobile devices running Windows CE and offers many of the features in Firefox, such as tabbed browsing, support for plug-ins and has an interface written in eXtensible User Interface Language (XUL), Chris Hofmann, director of engineering at Mozilla, said. By the way, XUL supports cascading style sheets (CSS), which is helpful in adapting web pages to the small screens of cellular phones and to reduce loading time; JavaScript and resource description language, (RDF), for storing dynamic content.
This technology preview release is to engage the developer community to join the project and help out in the development and generate new ideas.
Mimimo looks to solve the problems with current mobile devices browsers, which are difficult to use and don’t display web pages very well. You can have a look of the differences in rendering websites in the screenshots of Minimo running an iPAQ 3950 and 5555 handhelds.
So, PocketPC users be prepared to see the release of Minimo soon, hopefully. :) Unfortunately, Mozilla Foundation still have no current plans to port it to Palm.
