Gmail Notifier For Desktop & Firefox

I believe most of us have Gmail account, right? Anyway, just in case you still do not have any, email me, I’ll send you an invitation right away.

Ok, since most of us have Gmail, don’t you feel it’s quite troublesome to login to Gmail account to check whether you have got any email from time to time? Especially when you are waiting for an important email coming into your Gmail account.

Well, there are actually two great applications to help you on this.

Gmail do have its own official Gmail Notifier, which is a Windows application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. You’ll need to install it on your system and run it. Basically, the notification functionality of Google Gmail Notifier is similar to MSN Messenger (For Hotmail) or Yahoo Messenger (For Yahoo Mail), except you can’t use it for chatting. :p

You just need to download it then install it, if you have any question regarding this application, kindly refer to Google’s FAQ.

Firefox Gmail Notifier
An alternative to the official Google Gmail Notifier is a great extension for Firefox browser, a better and more secure web browser compared to Internet Explorer. This Gmail Notifier 0.5.0 Firefox extension will notify you for new Gmail messages directly from the browser itself. No application to install and run (except Firefox of course :) ) The latest version which released on July 27, 2005, has several new features including :-

Optional dropdown for the toolbar item to access labels (unread count per label is shown there as well as in the tooltip)
Get Gmail storage amount from screen scraping code
Option to only handle unread mail in inbox (rather than total unread) in Preferences.

As for the installation of this extension, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Go to the Firefox extension page, click on the Install Now link. Done !! :)

If you find any problem using this Firefox extension, feel free to browse through the helpful User Guide prepared by the author of the extension.

In fact, I have both installed, but I still prefer the Firefox extension over the official Gmail Notifier, just simply because personally I do not like to run a separate application. :)

One drawback of using Gmail Notifier Firefox extension is you will need to check for update because Google might change their coding in Gmail, thus, this extension might not function as usual. Anyway, need not to worry too much, once Google changed their codes, the author will come out with a new version as soon as possible I suppose. Besides, Firefox will notify you whenever there is a new version available too.

So, hope either one or both of these application able to help you. :)

Official one or Firefox extension?

For official Gmail Notifier, after you have downloaded the GmailInstaller.exe, just run it. Then you’ll find it in your All Programs from the Start button there. If it is running, you’ll see a light blue colour envelope-like icon appears on your right bottom corner (the Notification Area). Right click on it, then choose Check Mail Now. You will need to enter your username and password for your Gmail account then.

Whereas, the Firefox extension even easier, just click the Install Now link provided in one of the links in my article. That’s it. :)

Just my 2cent,

Instead of running additional program to ‘notify’ you of new email, just set to automatically ‘forward’ the emails from your Gmail account to your prefered email choice. You can forward to your Yahoo or Hotmail account.

This way, you don’t have to ‘login’ to multiple email notifier to get your mail. Im using MSN Messenger to notify me of any new email, be it from my Hotmail or Gmail account.

Right, that’s one of the ways. It helps to solve multiple Gmail accounts problem too.

Personally, I prefer the notifier because I have different priorities for different email accounts, so if everything comes into one of them might cause a little bit confusion.

hi :P

i usually just login to my gmail and leave it and then i’ll open another tab and continue browsing.the inbox refreshes itself every few minutes,so…

i used the unofficial notifier before,long long time ago but i dint really like it.cant remb why though.

Wah, it’s quite dangerous if the connection is always on, someone might tap in in between, but fortunately Gmail is using HTTP with SSL layer. So, should be safer. :)
