Microsoft officially launched its latest and much awaited operating system Windows 8 in Malaysia at Lowyat Plaza last Monday. Windows 8 introduces a beautiful new user interface designed specifically for touch and is designed for a no-compromise experience for work and play across various device form-factors.
The new Metro-style Start screen in Windows 8 is customized with live tiles and provides a fast, easy way to view and interact with all your favorite apps, people and content. Live tiles provide a glimpse into the information you care about most, all at a glance.
Thousands of apps are already available from the new Windows Store as well as many local apps such as The Star Online, AirAsia, Genting Resort World, iProperty and DiGi. The new Windows Store is cloud connected, which means that your settings automatically follow across your Windows 8 devices and the purchased apps can be downloaded on any Windows 8 device.
Nokia launched two of its latest Nokia Lumia phones, Nokia Lumia 800 & Nokia Lumia 710, in Malaysia early February this year. They created a buzz in the mobile phone industry in Malaysia as the consumers here are relatively new to Windows Phone platform. Many people are curious to find out what Nokia Lumia phones have to offer.
I did an unboxing video with a brief introduction to Nokia Lumia 800 a few days ago. Check it out to see what we’ll get in the package.
Below are the key features of Nokia Lumia 800 that worth mentioning.
Design & Ergonomics
Nokia Lumia 800 runs on Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS but on the exterior it looks very much the same with the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 which has one-piece polycarbonate body too. The phone is nice to grip because of its durable and slip-resistant polycarbonate material. Nokia Lumia 800 is currently available in 3 lovely colours (Black, Cyan & Magenta) at the moment while the white one will join the family later this year.
The curved 3.7″ AMOLED ClearBlack display seamlessly integrated into the body and it’s protected by the tough Corning Gorilla Glass. Basically, ClearBlack display reduces reflections on the screen and improve visual image quality, especially when we are at outdoor.
First of all, Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone who are celebrating it!
Over the last weekend, Nokia launched in Malaysia their latest smartphones running Windows Phone 7.5. Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800 were revealed at the launch at Pavilion, KL.
Nokia Lumia 800
Nokia Lumia 800 looks almost identical to Nokia N9 as it features a unibody polycarbonate body same as the Nokia N9. However, there are many differences between them. Below is the list of the key specifications of Nokia Lumia 800 :-
- Runs on Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS
- 1.4 Ghz Single Core MSM8255 CPU
- 16GB internal storage, 512MB program memory
- 3.7″ WVGA (800×480) AMOLED ClearBlack curved display
- 8MP auto-focus Carl Zeiss camera with LED flash
- 3 colours available: Black, Cyan, Magenta

Today Microsoft officially announced the new Windows Phone OS Windows Phone 7.1, codename Mango. This is the new OS for the upcoming Nokia Windows-based phones as well after both companies signed the partnership agreement in April 2011.
The official release date of Mango has yet to be announced, but Microsoft is committed to release it to all new and existing Windows Phones in Autumn 2011.
Let’s take a look into the new features added to Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) :-
Allow fast applications switching and support background processing, audio and file transfer.
- Copy & Past
Yes, this missing feature that is so critical for a smartphone OS will be available in Mango.
- Better social integration
Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter & Linked-In are integrated into the contacts, making emailing, SMS-ing and instant messaging a lot easier.
This is a new feature in People Hub that allows you put together related people into a grid of live tiles and put tagged pictures of those people into the groups.
- Smarter keyboard interface
Word prediction will be available when you are typing. For example, when you type “happy”, and the phone will display “birthday” for selection.
- Improved Live Tiles
One of the main attractions of Windows Phone OS is the Live Tiles so it’s further enhanced to hold more information, including push notifications via Live Agents running in the background.
- Hands-free messaging
Text-to-voice and voice-to-text engines allow for easier SMS and chatting. Android & iOS already have this feature, so I guess it’s not too late to have it in Mango too.
- Internet Explorer 9
IE 9 will be the new built-in browser. It provides support for HTML5 and full hardware acceleration. On top of that, the rendering engine of IE9 mobile version will be the same as the desktop version.
- Better Bing Search Engine
Mango provides new ways to search including Bing Vision, Bing Audio and voice. It offers location specific results such as nearest restaurant, events happening nearby, etc.
Take a glimpse of what Mango can offer you in the videos below :-
