Just few days ago, a report from the analysis done by Current Analysis suggested that AMD has overtook the market leader Intel in October as the leading supplier of computer processors for the US retail personal computer market. Current Analysis is an analysis company that delivers critical market share analysis for various industries including Computing, Consumer Electronics, Telecom Infrastructure and Printing & Supplies.

Current Analysis announced a press release regarding the analysis. According to Current Analysis, based on the data derived from the Current Analysis Retail Panel, a panel comprised of the United State’s leading consumer electronics retailers, they concluded that:

In October 2005, 49.8% of the personal computers (desktops and notebooks combined) sold in the US retail market utilized AMD processors, thus allowing AMD to narrowly surpass Intel, which accounted for 48.5% of the market.

I think this is the first time in history AMD surpasses Intel in supplying processors regardless is the US retail personal computer market or any other arena. Not too sure about the Dual Core server market where AMD’s Opteron is dominating though.

The following graph shows the trend of market share growth for both computer processor manufacturers in the US retail personal computer market. As we can see, in the month of October 2005, AMD eclipses Intel by a mere 1.3% of market share.

This is a very good result for AMD considering they still do not have any deal with Dell, the PC retail giant in the US consumer market. Currently, Dell only utilizes Intel processors in their personal computers.

The following are some statistic derived from the analysis done by Current Analysis.

• AMD’s share of unit sales in the US retail desktop space increased from 52.0% in September to 67.7% in October
• AMD’s share of unit sales in the US retail notebook space increased from 26.2% in September to 31.5% in October
• AMD’s October revenue share of retail PC sales (40.1%) trails that of Intel (57.6%)
  - Due to the significant price difference between AMD processors and Intel processors.

So, kudos to AMD and hope they keep up the good work. Healthy competition is always good for everyone.

By the way, I can’t wait to see the outcome of the lawsuit AMD filed against Intel back in July 2005.
