AMD Sues Intel !!!

AMD
This is no joke, dude !!

When I come across this news, I was like “Oh Ow, this finally happens !”.

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), the world’s No.2 maker of computer microprocessors, said Tuesday, June 28, 2005, it had filed an antitrust lawsuit against Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of chips, in U.S. federal district court for the district of Delaware accusing Intel of unfair competition, which limited market share growth of AMD.

Quoted:
The antitrust complaint against Intel Corporation was filed under Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act, Sections 4 and 16 of the Clayton Act, and the California Business and Professions Code.

On AMD website, an Open Letter from Hector Ruiz, AMD Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer is published, giving some brief information about this law suit. The 48-page complaint, which available on AMD website, explains in detail how Intel has unlawfully maintained its monopoly in the x86 microprocessor market by engaging in worldwide coercion of customers from dealing with AMD.

In short, AMD claimed Intel has been doing illegal and unfair action including the following:-

  • Intel has forced major customers into exclusive or near-exclusive deals.
  • Intel has conditioned rebates, allowances and market development funding on customers’ agreement to severely limit or forego entirely purchases from AMD.
  • Intel has established a system of discriminatory, retroactive, first-dollar rebates triggered by purchases at such high levels as to have the practical and intended effect of denying customers the freedom to purchase any significant volume of processors from AMD.
  • Intel has threatened retaliation against customers introducing AMD computer platforms, particularly in strategic market segments.
  • Intel has established and enforced quotas among key retailers effectively requiring them to stock overwhelmingly, if not exclusively, Intel-powered computers, thereby artificially limiting consumer choice.
  • It has forced PC makers and technology partners to boycott AMD product launches and promotions.
  • Intel has abused its market power by forcing on the industry technical standards and products which have as their central purpose the handicapping of AMD in the marketplace.

Oh man, this will be a very interesting law suit to follow. ;;)

Yeah, bagus. Serves Intel right. AMD chips are waaayyy much better than Intel’s, but because of Intel’s bullying, people tend to associate good computer microprocessors = Intel. How unfair.

This is certainly an interesting case to follow, but at the moment no one knows who will win at the end. :)

Anyway, I do believe AMD filed this antitrust complaint with some kind of proofs and confidence too. Otherwise, they won’t simply file a law suit like this, right?

Let’s see how it goes, lah.

    LoL, I’m using AMD64 754 3000+. :D

My Intel friends always say I side AMD because I’m a AMD user. Well, I bought AMD simply because it was cheap and is performing at almost the same (if not the same) level as Intel chip. So, I find no reason why should I buy Intel chip. Just that simply.

Furthermore, I’ve seen so many heat problems with my friends PC using P4 chips. I’m so glad I chosen AMD. :) In fact, I was so surprise my system temperature stayed around 30 degree of Celcius after running for 12 hours that day.

In this lawsuit, we are talking about unfair acts to discourage people from selling or buying AMD chips, this is very wrong, isn’t it?

You know what, I’ve heard from my Intel friends, his colleague even afraid of revealing his home PC is using AMD processor. I believe there is some kind of pressure to stop Intel employees from using AMD chip for personal use. So, is this another unfair act or what?

Hahah… Let me gather some proofs from them (if there is any) and pass to AMD. Kekekke …. :D

Buy AMD or not really depends on personal preference, there should not be any kind of pressure or misleading while buying or selling, right?
