Last August, I blogged about large scale WiFi city while San Francisco of the United State was planning to become a wide scale WiFi zone covering the whole San Francisco city. In less than one year, a recent news entry of The China Post is claiming that Taipei has now become the world’s first large-scale wireless city that 90% of its public spaces is covered with wireless Internet access. Though there is not exact figure of how wide the city covered.

4,000 access points (APs) was installed on all public facilities by WIFLY, a wireless service offered by Q-Ware Corp., under the commission of the Taipei City government. By end of this month, all MRT stations, city hospitals and public libraries, 826 7-11 convenience stores, 71 Starbucks coffee shops and major business districts will be able to enjoy the wireless service.

The wireless Internet service provided by WIFLY is not free. General public may apply for unlimited access to WIFLY at a rate of NT$4,200/year (~USD$128 or ~RM471) or NT$350/month (~USD11 or ~RM39). Under the current special summer promotion, students may get the same service for NT$3,000/year (~USD91 or ~RM336) or NT$299/month (~USD$9 or ~RM35).
