This is simply because once after the period you register with Yahoo!, the lowest domain renew fee I have seen is around USD$7, which is far higher than if you register a longer period with Yahoo! now. I usually register mine from Yahoo! insane offer for more than 3 years. The period of registering is not a big issue, but to pick a really nice and suitable one will cause you headache. :) Well, I would suggest to pick a longer period.
