Dual-core desktops hit the market

Tuesday 19 April 2005 @ 2:50 pm

Even though Advanced Micro Devices first launched Dual Core processors, now Dell and Velocity Micro are among the first to begin taking orders on dual-core desktops based on Intel’s Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 processor.

For now, dual-core chips will sit at the top of the PC pyramid . The desktops, priced around USD$2,300 to USD$3,000, are aimed at home multimedia and gaming enthusiasts who want the latest technology, as well as professionals in areas such as video editing. I suppose only hardcore gamers or heavy multimedia users willing to get one of this highly priced babies. :p

World’s Most Northerly Wi-Fi Hotspot

Tuesday 19 April 2005 @ 2:16 pm

Setting up a wireless LAN at the North Pole?
Yup, you are correct !

Two employees at Intel Russia recently erected what may have been the world’s most northerly Wi-Fi hotspot–just about 80 miles from the North Pole.

According to Intel, the air temperature of the surrounding is rarely above -30 Celsius. This environment is never an ideal one to computer devices. Besides, there is temparature difference between indoor and outdoor temparatures, in turn, causes condensation to form on the laptop. Furthurmore, batteries power dries up fast in low temperatures.

Intel also points to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere, which I agree with no doubt. :)

According to Seagate, this drive is also very resistant to shock. The company claims the drives can withstand 900 Gs of non-operating shock and 250 Gs of operating shock without damage to hard drive data. The new drives also sport better power efficiency and near-silent operation.

Why Firefox keeps on releasing new version?

Monday 18 April 2005 @ 6:25 pm

Ever wonder why I strongly recommend Firefox and why it releases newer version so frequently? Is it unsafe or what?

Now let me give you some idea why a software releases a newer version. The following are some of the reasons:-

  • Fix security flaw(s).
  • Fix software bug(s).
  • Come with extra feature(s).
  • Come with enhanced feature(s).

One thing for sure, a newer version should preform better than the previous one (otherwise why release? ;) ). No software is perfectly coded, no software has no bug and no software has zero flaw. That’s why we always see a newer version is introduced from time to time.

In other words, Firefox releases newer version so frequently, is basically to avoid the newly discovered security flaw to be exploited. That’s why as soon as they discover any flaw or bug, they patch it almost immediately (Not like IE, they seem patching it only after a serious exploitation has been taken part. :( ). Ok, my purpose here is not to say bad things about IE, I will only tell you how good Firefox is. :)

Read this article, if you have questions regarding Firefox latest release like the following:-

  • Explain what is included in Firefox 1.0.3 and Mozilla 1.7.7 and what prompted these releases?
  • Have there been any known exploits of the bugs patched in Firefox 1.0.3?
  • How often will you release updates?
  • Should everyone download the update, and if so, how?
  • With the growth in Firefox market share, are you becoming a bigger target for hackers?
  • Traditional software companies take much longer to issue updates, how are you able to turn them around so quickly?

Tell you frankly, Firefox will only become better and better with the help of strong community of developers. :)

AMD Turion64 Mobile

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will take a headstart and a chance for the lead in the 64-bit mobile CPU market with its forthcoming Turion 64, as Intel will not launch its 64-bit mobile CPU until the second quarter of 2006……

In addition, Microsoft will release its Windows XP 64-bit edition this quarter (due in April) AMD Turion 64 should be the only standard to support the version before the availability of Intel’s 64-bit mobile CPU.
