AMD Dual Core Opteron Due This Month

Sunday 10 April 2005 @ 6:32 pm

The long await AMD dual core processor, named Opteron, is finally going to be released on April 21, 2005. This launching date is months ahead of their original summer launch schedule.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker also is expected to announce its dual-core chips for personal computers will go on sale in June.

AMD Dual Core Opteron

In an attempt to encourage rapid adoption, AMD will sell some of the new chips at the same prices as the corresponding single-core models they’ll replace, a source familiar with the products said. So, hopefully we can still enjoy low price dual core processors from AMD. Kodus to AMD !!

For more information, please read the sourse.

So, will AMD win the Dual-Core race? You judge. :)

GMail Drive

Friday 8 April 2005 @ 2:16 pm

Broadband service outage won’t stop me from writing something good here. :D

Ever thought of using GMail as a virtual drive for your file storage since Google is now providing such a huge mailbox size?

The following is an option to do so,

GMail Drive

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n’drop files to.

Enjoy this virtual drive. :)

Note: Please take note that, GMail Drive is still in experimental phase, so check for any update frequently. Some limitations you can find in this application too such as you need to set the total filename size must be less than 40 characters.

Asia’s Braodband Services Hit By Outages

Friday 8 April 2005 @ 11:48 am

It is reported the Asia Pacific Cable Network-2 (APCN-2) is suffering cable failure since April 7, 2005. This cable failure was happened in East Asia.

Source from The Star newspaper
Source from TMNet Streamyx

Until the moment I write this Site News, the service is still interrupted. However, only Asia readers from certain countries like Malaysia, Singapore, etc will have difficulties accessing my blog because the server of this website is residing in the US. Readers from outside Asia regions will have no problem at all browsing it. :)

One thing that makes me wonder is, from MSC (Multimedia Super Corridoor) website, MSC claimed

Malaysia is connected to the major submarine cable systems such as SMW3, APCN, APCN2, FLAG, SAFE and several smaller regional systems. These cable systems land in 4 different locations throughout Malaysia.

by MSC Malaysia

Now only one submarine cable (APCN2) is hit by outages, has made Malaysia’s broadband crawling since April 7, 2005.

Due to this sad incident, i’m having difficulties accessing to major websites residing outside Malaysia, hence, paralyzed me from writing any article here. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. :) I’ll think of other solutions if the problem is not solved by today or tomorrow.

GMail will reach 3 Gig on Jan 1st, 06

Wednesday 6 April 2005 @ 3:22 am

According to the source, GMail space is increasing in the pace of 24,912 seconds for 1 Meg.

So, i did a calculation myself as well.

Target Milestone = 2075MB
The Space When I Wrote This = 2061.55 MB (at 3.00am, April 6th, 05)
Difference = 2075 – 2061.55 = 13.45 MB

So,
Time Needed To Reach 2075MB
= 24,912 sec x 13.45 MB
= 335066.4 sec
= 93 hrs (335066.4/3600)
= 3.87 days (So, it’s around 3 days and 21 hrs)

So, we in Malaysia will have 2075 MB of GMail space on Sunday, April 10th 2005, 00:00:00 (GMT+8).

As compared to what original author have said, we will get 2075MB on on Saturday, April 9th 2005, 16:00:00 (GMT). It’s absolutely true, because Malaysia is in GMT+8, so we have to add 8 hrs.

All in all, if the concept of 1 Meg needs 24,912 seconds to grow, then it’s no doubt, on Sunday, January 1st 2006, 17:00:00 (GMT+8), we all here wil have 3Gig GMail space !!

Note: This calculation makes sense, if and only if, we need 24,912 seconds to have 1 more Meg of GMail space. :)
