When Google Is Born !!

Thursday 15 September 2005 @ 2:32 pm

Google
Some of us might already known that Google was actually a research project done by the founder Sergey Brin and Larry Page when they were pursuing their PHD doctorate programme in Standford University. And it is now 7 years old.

In fact, when Google was just set up, there were only less than 25 million pages indexed, this number has gone rocket high since it started to serve us and reach countless pages nowadays.

IBM, Intel and Sun were the hardware sponsors to Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Besides, they were using GNU, Linux and Python as the foundation software for Google. No wonder, they seem to be a big threat to Microsoft nowadays. :p

By the way, how many of us have any idea how was the setup of all the machines for the project? Let’s have a look how Google looked like in 1998 :-

This is the server using only 300 MHz Dual Pentium II, 512MB of RAM and nine 9GB harddisk.

Apple iPod Nano Hacked

Tuesday 13 September 2005 @ 11:29 am

I am not too sure is this the first hack for Apple iPod Nano, but for sure, it’s one of the earliest after we have just heard of the launch of iPod Nano less than 1 week ago.

IPod Nano Mod

At the moment, possible hacks to iPod Nano are still limited, not like other members of the iPod family where you can even install a Linux distribution into it. Anyway, there are only a few tricks can be done to iPod Nano, such as changing the fonts, text strings and the graphics.

eBay Sealed Skype Deal

Tuesday 13 September 2005 @ 3:30 am

SkypEbay
After weeks of speculation about eBay going to acquire Skype, eBay sealed the deal on Monday, September 12, 2005, by paying Skype for USD$2.6 billion in cash ans stock. This deal may go up to USD$4.1billion based on performance-based bonuses within 2005-2009.

When both leaders in auction business and Voice-over-IP communication industry met, certainly there will be some spark in the business itself. From the acquisition, eBay is almost certain to benefit from the free Skype calls which will smoothen the way for more deals to go through. Furthermore, auction fraud can be kept to minimal as most of the buyers will request for a talk or so to the seller through Skype. That’s for sure, eBay will leverage the current 54 million members in 225 countries and territories and at the growth rate of 150,000 users per day.

Of course, needless to say, Skype will have pocketed the total amount of the acquisition, which believed to be 42 times of Skype’s expected 2005 earnings of USD$60 million. With these money, hopefully, we will see more innovative services will be launched by Skype.

Weekly Highlights [Sep 5, 2005 – Sep 11, 2005]

Monday 12 September 2005 @ 3:51 am

Over the past one week, there are a few new products and services launched. Among those products are Motorola’s iTunes enabled phone and Apple iPod Nano, while there was one new service launched locally, another paid TV service MiTV. Even though, last week was a busy week for me, still I manage to keep 2 posts a day until Sunday.

Let’s see what have I wrote.

Monday
I wrote an article about a stylish handmade PC casing made by oak hardwood and 1/4″ amber-tinted plexiglass. It is really elegant yet simple. Besides, there were news sources suggested the forthcoming Windows OS, Windows Vista, will have a new restart manager called “Freeze Dry“, which helps in installing patches without forcing user to reboot the machine.

Tuesday
Before the iTunes phone was launched, there were at least 3 mobile phone operators around the globe, including Cingular Wireless, T-Mobile and O2, are eager about offering service to the mobile phone. Then you saw the images of the impact of Hurricane Katrina shown on Google Earth service.

Wednesday
I shared an article regarding a full guide of FireFox tweaking. It is very useful if you would like your web browser to perform at its best. Then we saw an alternative of paid TV service was finally here in Malaysia with the introduction of MiTV.

Thursday
On last Thursday, a controversial post was publish regarding an Ultra Super Laptop, which has 6.8Ghz CPU, 1TB RAM and 2TB storage. Some say it is fiction, what do you think? Then we saw a brand new product from Apple, Apple iPod Nano.

Friday
I was 26 hours late to greet Google for its 7th birthday. As scheduled, the Motorola iTunes phone was launched last Friday.

Saturday
Speculation saying eBay is going to acquire Skype has been spreading for the past week, so I blogged about it too. On the same day, after checking with fellow bloggers, there was a slight adjustment on Google Page Rank.

Sunday
As usual, Sunday is always the least productive day. I just managed to put up a short tutorial of putting a Red Cross banner on the top of your blog or website.
