Creation Of Big Company Names

Monday 17 October 2005 @ 5:35 pm

Have you ever wonder of how those big companies come out with the idea of how to name their companies? Like me, probably you might think some of the big names are just a common word that we speak everyday like Yahoo!, or the company just simply comes up with such a name.

Well, this page gives you a better idea of knowing how the big names are created. I am not too sure about the validity of the creation of the names, but I felt it is something really interesting to share with you all. Of course, if you know the original idea of naming those names listed, feel free to tell us in the comment area. :)

I will just list down some of the famous ones :-

  • Yahoo!
It’s actually an acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”. See the name history. Before this, I thought it is just a simple word “Yahoo”.
  • Sun Microsystems
Now only I know it means the acronym for Stanford University Network.
  • Microsoft
Originally called Micro-Soft, which is the suppose to be a short form of MICROcomputer SOFTware. The ‘-‘ was then removed.
  • Intel
I thought it means Intelligence, but in fact it is the acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.
  • Hotmail
Named as such was not because the email is hot, but because Hotmail includes the letters “html”, which is the most widely used programming language on the Internet. Initially, HoTMaiL was the way how it is written.
  • Cisco
Actually it’s the abbreviation of San Francisco, and the company logo is the image of Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Before knowing the real reason, I thought the logo is some form of signal wave. :D
  • Apple Computers
Apple is the favourite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. LoL … This is classic !

A Comprehensive Line of iPod nano Accessories

Monday 10 October 2005 @ 11:51 pm

Well, after viewing the official accessories page of Apple’s iPod nano on Apple.com, I did a search on Google for iPod nano accessories. Then I found one of the most comprehensive line of iPod nano accessories is on XtremeMac.

FS1
FS1 High Definition Earphone

In addition to the existing line of official accessories, XtremeMac has 3 major categories, which are :-

  • iPod nano cases – Where you can find arm bands and durable cases.
  • iPod nano charges – Where you can find charges for use in vehicles
  • iPod nano audio products – Where you find nicely designed audio system for iPod nano

Quite a number of iPod nano users complained that the sleek casing of iPod nano is too easily to get scratch, so I think the stylish casing offered by XtremeMac will have a niche market to penetrate. One thing surprised me is that Apple is not selling any car charger from iPod nano on the official accessories page, but no worries, XtremeMac has a total of 3 car charges for you to choose from.

Sunday 9 October 2005 @ 11:02 pm

We have heard lots of viruses and worms infecting mobile phones nowadays, some even pretend to be antivirus software installed in the mobile phone. Before the situation getting worse, Nokia has come out with a proactive solution which is to install Symantec’s Mobile Security software on its Series 60 and Symbian based phones.

In fact, Nokia and Symantec have come to an agreement to pre-install Mobile Security on Series 60 smart phones.

Quoted:
Mobile Security provide anti-virus protection by closing vulnerable ports. The software’s AutoProtect feature runs a continuing scan that looks for malicious code, and also acts as a firewall. The software can be updated over the wireless network.

Best PC Mod : I Got Intel Outside

Saturday 1 October 2005 @ 8:44 am

Well, we have seen lots of PC modifications all year long. We have even seen Apple Mac Mini modification, which fits a Mac Mini into a toy Millennium Falcon few weeks back.

Usually when we talk about PC modification, we will think of how to design the PC casing and the components placing in the PC case. The following PC modification I want to show is by far the first PC modification I have seen that has a concept of “think out of the box“.

Wall Crawler

The Wall Crawler PC is one of the contestants of the ExtremeTech Crazy Case Mod Contest. This creative modding idea was submitted by Joe Cefalu.

Well, of course to stick all PC components on the wall was not easy, because not every component has holes to get screwed on the wall. Thus, he used a product called “Industrial Velcro“, a 4 inch strip, that claimed will hold up 40 pounds to a rough concrete or brick wall.
