Athlon X2 vs Pentium D : Realtime Stress Test

Friday 10 June 2005 @ 12:50 am

We’ve been debating how good are those newly released chips, Athlon X2 from AMD and Pentium D 840 EE from Intel.

The following 2 tests are stress tests performed by TomsHardware running on Athlon 64 X2 4800 and Pentium D 840 EE, to test the stability and performance.

Stress Test On Athlon X2 4800

Stress Test On Pentium D 840 EE

By the time I write this article (12:36:00 PM EST), Athlon X2 4800 has been running for 46 h and 14 min with 0 reboot !! Meanwhile, Pentium D 840 EE has been running for 24 h and 1 min and rebooted 3 times.

Besides, as you can see, the temperature of Athlon X2 4800 is fluctuating between 50 – 55 Celcius, whereas Pentium D 840 EE is fluctuating between 60 – 70 Celcius. I have a feeling the frequency of reboot might due to the heat generated by the processor. 50 – 55 Celcius for a Dual Core processor is kind of amazing because even I am using a single core AMD64 very often my CPU temperature stays around 55 Celcius using the heatsink and cooling fan procided by the manufacturer.

HmMMm… Is the extra money for AMD Athlon X2 well worth the stability and low heat? You decide. :)

Programmers For Browsers Wanted

Wednesday 8 June 2005 @ 2:28 pm

IE Blog just announced some job vacancies in Microsoft as Programming Writer for Internet Explorer (IE). This is their newest open position is for a Programming Writer position for work on the SDK documentation for IE7.

At the same time, Mozilla is also hiring Software Engineering for the famous Firefox browser as well. This might be the step to cover the lost of a few key developers in Mozilla who have already joined Google in the past 6 months. At first, Ben Goodger & Darin Fisher in January, 2005. Then we saw Brian Ryner joined Google in March, 2005.

Looks like, more and more web browser developers are needed for each browser company to sustain their competitiveness. So, anyone interested in joining one of them. :)

p/s: Quite surprisingly, I saw a Get Firefox! link in the IE Blog. LoL =))

Intel Targets 9-5 Notebook By 2008

Tuesday 7 June 2005 @ 4:35 pm

Intel
Computer processor manufacturer Intel, in fact, is so bullish on the matter that it recently moved up a deadline for notebook makers by two years. It’s now asking them to produce by 2008 thin and light notebooks that can run for eight hours without the use of additional external batteries, said Mooly Eden, vice president of the Intel’s mobility group.

If everthing goes well, within three to four years, portable PCs will be expected to see battery life double from today’s four-hour stretch.
