Philips BDM4065UC comes with 3 “Smart” features:-

  • SmartResponse
  • SmartContrast
  • SmartImage

As mentioned in Part 1: Introduction & Unboxing, SmartResponse feature will make the response rate faster by shifting pixels as quickly as possible. You can set it to 3 speeds, as in Fast, Faster and Fastest. While SmartResponse may solve the ghosting (smearing) effect due to slow response rate, it somehow creates inverse ghosting (trailing of images) as a side effect. All these are only noticeable if you really look very closely.

SmartContrast, as the name itself suggests, allows the monitor to adjust backlight brightness automatically according to the amount of “light” or “dark” in the image on display.

SmartImage is a series of presets for different viewing scenarios like Office, Photo, Movie, Game, Economy and SmartUniformity. So it saves you time in adjusting and calibrating the brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc, depending on what you are viewing on the monitor. With SmartImage, you can quickly select any of these presets and the monitor will adjust the settings automatically. While most of the presets in SmartImages are self-explanatory, SmartUniformity is more special and it basically will spread the brightness evenly throughout the huge screen, which I think is particularly good for meeting or presentation.

You’ll have to delve into the OSD to change the options for SmartResponse and SmartContrast but options for SmartImage can be selected quicker by just pushing the joystick to the left to access the list as shown below.

Philips BDM4065UC monitor comes with PIP (Picture-in-Picture) & PBP (Picture-by-Picture) features which allows you to connect up to 4 sources and display the outputs simultaneously. With a huge 40” screen, the BDM4065UC has so much screen real estate it makes a perfect monitor for displaying more than 1 output by splitting the screen into multiple smaller screens.

PIP (Picture-in-Picture) allows 2 outputs displaying on the monitor simultaneously, one smaller screen overlaying on top of a full screen. You can adjust the smaller screen in 3 sizes (small, medium, large) and display it at any of the four corners of the monitor. Instead of keeping an eye on a separate monitor such as watching a live football match on satellite TV, now you can display the live match within one huge monitor. Awesome!

PBP (Picture-by-Picture) feature offers flexibility to display up to 4 sources side-by-side, from 2 windows, to 3 and to a maximum of 4 as shown in pictures below. In PBP, you get to choose the input source for each window. However, there’s no option to adjust the size of the windows.
