Global positioning system (GPS) device has gained its popularity in Malaysia in the past few years and we have seen many different brands coming into the market with competitive prices since then. It’s always good for the consumers to have options picking the right GPS device because each of us may have different considerations in term of the pricing, features, hardware, ease of use, etc.

Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator

Recently I got my hands on this affordable Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator which is selling at only RM299. It is one of the cheapest 4.3″ touch screen GPS devices I’ve seen in the market so far.

It’s fair to say that Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator is cheap in price but rich in features. The package in the box includes an in-car cradle with a mini stand, a car charger (input 12V, output 5V/1.5A) and a mini USB cable. Since the LCD touch screen of Q4.3 is resistive, the GPS is also equipped with a stylus that nicely slides in at the back of the device.

Gogopal Stylus

I brought this Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator along during my road trip to Genting via Ipoh, Perak and it served me well. In fact, it is so user friendly I didn’t even read the quick start guide before using the GPS. Feature wise it impresses me in a few ways too, particularly the search function, voice guidance with clear instruction and maps with 3D landmarks.

GPS Functions

There are 8 ways to search for a destination such as by Points of Interests (POI) name, postal code (only in Singapore), nearby places or coordinates of the destination. A nifty function in destination search is the character highlighting for accurate typing as shown in the picture below.

Character highlighting

The turn-by-turn voice guidance supports 8 languages: English (Britain & US), Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. Whereas the language for display supports up to 11 languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, Indonesian, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, French and Spanish. The wide variety of language support is definitely a plus point for foreigners in Malaysia and Singapore.

The map with 3D landmarks in Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator is exceptionally good, especially in both Junction Zoom and Lane Information feature. At every junction, the map features a top-down view on approach, allowing a clear view of the path ahead to help us make the correct turn. As for Lane Information, the map shows the provision of lane information to guide us onto the correct lanes for the next turn or maneuver. In most situations, these little yellow arrows would be the life saver for making the correct turn.

Feel free to watch my video demonstration below to see the GPS device in action. It does its jobs fairly well and for such a low price it definitely gives you the best bang of your bucks. Well, if you are expecting more from the GPS, Gogopal will be putting speed camera zones feature into the device in 2nd quarter of 2012.

Gogopal Q4.3 GPS Navigator comes with a 1-year free map update period. A 1-year of map updates can be purchased for RM45 after the free update period has expired. Usually the maps will be updated every 6-7 months and this all-in-one update will include navigation software update as well. Now you can buy the GPS online at Gogopal’s online partners website at only RM299.
