WinXP “Minimum” System Requirements

Sunday 15 January 2006 @ 10:53 pm

Well, I guess most of us are using Windows XP as the operating system for your PC. According to Microsoft website, the official minimum requirements for Windows XP Home edition and Professional edition are CPU with 233MHz and 64MB memory.

Have you ever wonder how low can the CPU speed and memory to be enough to run a Windows XP? I just come across a webpage demonstrating a Minimal-Requirement-Test (Please excuse the author for the language, I think English is not his/her native language) to see how low the computer system specification can be to support Windows XP. By the way, just in case you don’t know, the minimum memory requirement for the forthcoming Windows OS, Windows Vista, is 512MB memory.

WinXP 20MHz

There are 3 extreme tests all together in the XP Minimal-Requirement-Test. The following are the break down of the initial setups and results obtained :-

    First Test

  • Initial setup : CPU 100MHz and 64MB RAM
  • Result obtained : CPU 75MHz and 24MB RAM
    Second Test

  • Initial setup : CPU 83MHz and 64MB RAM
  • Result obtained : CPU 63MHz and 18MB RAM
    Third Test

  • Initial setup : CPU 60MHz and 64MB RAM
  • Result obtained : CPU 20MHz and 32MB RAM

As we can see from the tests, WinXP can actually run at the insanely low 20MHz but with more memory or at 18MB of RAM with a faster processor speed. After showing you the world record of CPU overclocking, this is another crazy test I deliver to you, hope you like it. :)

I came across to your site looking to improve my Windows Xp.  You are correct that it can run on low ram but it make take a while for the programs to load.

Anyway, great post.  I will try to run it on virtual machine to see how slow it loads.  More power.  I admire people who looks tweaks and hacks to make life better.

    Best of luck.
