Yahoo! Mindset

Thursday 2 June 2005 @ 11:31 pm

We have seen lots of innovative services from Google Labs. Yahoo! does have similar lab too, called Yahoo! Research Lab.

Recently, Yahoo! offering is a test version of Yahoo! Mindset.

Yahoo! Mindset allows you to sort search results for your query into commercial or non-commercial (informational) results, based on whether you’re shopping or seeking information. Commercial implies that the primary purpose of a given page is to sell you something. Whereas, informational implies that the primary purpose of the page is to provide information related to your search.

There is a slider bar is the search page, which allows you to move it to the right for commercial results and to the left for non-commercial results. The result will change immediately while you are sliding the bar.

Mobile Phone As Credit Card

Thursday 2 June 2005 @ 9:57 pm

Since the first day mobile phone invented, we have seen more and more functionalities a mobile phone has. First, it was for making calls, then text messaging, after that manufacturers added cameras, e-mail, music etc into the phone.

After introducing handsets last year that double as debit cards, now, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo Inc. wants to entrench the once-humble cell phone even deeper into consumer lifestyles by turning it into an electronic wallet – as a full-fledged credit cards.

Quoted:
To boost its effort to make mobiles the new way to pay, DoCoMo is taking a 34% stake in Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc.‘s credit-card business. In late April, DoCoMo said it would pay $935 million for the stake in Japan’s second-largest credit-card issuer. DoCoMo has also held talks with Japan’s No. 1 issuer, JCB International Co., about some sort of tie-up, though no details have been released.

Regarding security, DoCoMo says that won’t be a problem. Each time a customer makes a purchase using the phone, the company will automatically send an e-mail confirming the transaction – which should aid in detecting fraud sooner than with traditional credit cards.

Well, this is no doubt another big step in mobile phone evolution. :)

No More “My” In Next Windows

Wednesday 1 June 2005 @ 4:20 am

No More MY
Microsoft Corp. plans to stop using the word “my” as the default prefix for such folders as “My Documents,” “My Music,” “My Pictures” etc. So, Starting in the next Windows version, folders name will be called simply as “Documents,” “Music,” and so on.

This minor change will surely leave some influence to our daily life.

Quoted:
With any other product, such a minor change probably wouldn’t even be noticed. But the Microsoft operating system runs on more than 90 percent of the world’s personal computers, and its persistent use of the word has been one of its most conspicuous characteristics — helping to fuel widespread use of the “my” prefix in the technology industry.
