Urchin is a website statistic analysis script used by website owners to track the traffic and user experience of the website. If you happen to have a hosting account with you, probably you have heard about this useful analytics scipt other than Webalizer and Awstats. Anyway, this great service was acquired by Google in March, 2005, but its future development has been a mystery since the acquisition. Though Urchin still selling its service to the end users through its website, no one (of course except Google employees) actually knows what Google will do to Urchin.
Somehow, when I was playing with the latest Google AdSense feature in Blogger.com just now, I found that Google is actually applying Urchin on its free blogging service. I saw connections established to service.urchin.com, when I login to the Google AdSense account from within Blogger.com.
So, I guess Google is only applying Urchin service to its own services at the moment. One thing I really hope to see in near future is Google offering this expensive website analytics script Free Of Charge like the rest of its great services.

Notice something? Google is trying to track people. The Urchin information is probably kept a secret, and the general public cannot access it.
I wonder why. The moment I discovered Urchin was owned by Google, I stopped using it. Damn! It had such nice graphs and all….

I had the same feeling.
I suspect the tracking mechanism goes to when we are using Google Web Accelerator and Google Secure Access as well.
However, they clearly stated in the Terms Of Service that they will not use any private data when we are using the mentioned services. :-?

I don’t think it’s possible for Google to offer the service free. Even if they are offering, only very limited service will be offered.

Google has been giving so many free services as their core business strategy, that’s why somehow I think it is possible they will offer it free.
However, I do agree with you, maybe only limited features will be offered free, just like the Google Earth service.
