Doctor Robot

Friday 20 May 2005 @ 1:32 am

Robot Doctor
A London hospital is to set robots to inspect the patient on the wards, it was announced yesterday.

The robot doctor will tour the wards of St Mary’s Hospital, London, in a pilot project.

The aim of the project is not to confine doctors at St Mary’s to their offices but to enable specialists from far a field to examine patients.

During the pilot project, researchers will assess patient reaction to the robots and also the skills needed by doctors to use them effectively.

Quoted:
“Our robots certainly would never replace all doctors on ward rounds, but they are a communication tool which allows a doctor to have direct contact with their patient if they are unable to get to them.”

VoIP On Nokia Phones

Friday 20 May 2005 @ 12:22 am

SCN Ltd., A United Kingdom-based company, announced Tuesday that they have developed a software solution that enables Nokia Series 60 cell phones to provide VoIP service using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology.

SCN launched its TruPhone Beta version for use with Nokia Series 60 Bluetooth-enabled cell phones. However, Wi-Fi compatibled version will come later.

Quoted:
“You won’t need a special phone or any special equipment,” said Gavin Miller, SCN’s press officer. “All you need is the software.”

SCN uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access points that are routed over IP via Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Companies with a large number of employees can establish their own server-based SCN Web telephoning system in an approach that can keep a lid on the number of employees using expensive cellular systems.

So, with this software, people will surely make use of the VoIP feature to avoid paying expensive calls. :)

VoIP In Yahoo Messenger Soon

Thursday 19 May 2005 @ 7:41 pm

Yahoo late Tuesday will introduce a test version of its instant-messaging software that utilizes VoIP.

Yahoo Messenger

Yahoo Messenger, has an estimated 65 million users worldwide, will offer a free update during the software’s test phase. In addition to letting people send standard instant text messages, the new version is designed to make it easy to call friends free via computer, send a short text message to a mobile device, share photos and post content to a personal Web log.

Quoted:
“E-mail was the killer application from the mid to late ’90s, then instant chat came second, now VoIP is opening up the third chapter,” Frazier Miller, director of Yahoo Messenger, said in an interview.

This is still a good news, though we can already use Skype for VoIP at the moment. Anyway, as long as the competition is still going on, there will be more features to be integrated in, hopefully. :)

Nasty Worm Targets AIM

Thursday 19 May 2005 @ 10:48 am

New worm emerged early this week, variously named “Oscarbot-B” and “Doyorg” by antivirus companies, are targeting users of AOL’s instant messaging software, AIM. Something similar to the recent MSN worm, I think.

Quoted:
The Windows-based malware emerged early this week, and has made itself a nuisance for its ability to hijack the list of contacts or “buddies” in an infected user’s IM account. After opening a window to any one of these contacts with the message “Hey check this out“, it invites users to follow an embedded link. Anyone who clicks on this will risk becoming its next victim.

The worm creates a backdoor into Internet Relay Chat (IRC) to download and run files on machines where infection is successful, commanded by the instruction of the attacker, hence, giving remote access to that infected PC.

So, all AIM users, please be aware of all the links your buddies sent you, re-confirm with them before clicking it is always an advisable idea.
