RSS Is Core Technology In Longhorn

Tuesday 28 June 2005 @ 1:19 pm

Since XML is one of the core languages for Microsoft applications, I am not surprise Microsoft announced that Longhorn will incorporate RSS (Really Simple Syndication) as a core technology. This news has been confirmed during the Gnomedex conference in Seattle last Friday, June 24, 2005.

Quoted:
Gary Schare, director of strategic product management in the Windows division of Microsoft, says that while RSS is a reliable standard for updating information in message form, it currently has no logical way to organize that information in a way that could help subscribers keep track of what is being fed to them.

“RSS is good for delivering what’s new, but not so good for things that are getting sorted or reordered,” Schare says.

RSS capability will be built into the OS, for example, you can have one set of newsfeed subscriptions show up in any Longhorn-compatibled newsreader or other application. Microsoft also says that Longhorn’s RSS will make it easier for software developers to incorporate RSS-enabled features into their programs without having to build the functionality from scratch.

Google SMS
Since I blog about the Google Mobile Search, I might as well talk about Google SMS Service too. :)

Last month, I blogged about Google Into SMS Service, when Google acquired New York based texting (SMS) service provider, Dodgeball. I had a feeling that Google might have some plans to tap into SMS service sooner or later, now as I’ve expected they have Google SMS Service !!

Quoted:
Google SMS (Short Message Service) enables you to send queries as text messages over your mobile phone or device and easily get precise answers to your questions. No links. No web pages.

Google Launched Mobile XHTML Search

Tuesday 21 June 2005 @ 4:35 pm

Google Mobile Service
Google has just launched a new search service that only links to XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) pages that have been formatted for display in small screens of mobile devices like PDA and mobile phone. Mobile users can already perform searches from mobile device with a Web browser and enter a query in the search box at Google.com or Google.com/xhtml. For your information, this blog is written in XHTML. :)

This week, Google added a new “Mobile Web” option to the pages. When this button is selected, users will only receive links to XHTML pages that have been formatted for the smaller displays of mobile devices.

In fact, Google also offers a similar Web search service for phones that support WML (Wireless Markup Language) instead of XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language). The WML search service can be reached at Google.com/wml. However, WML doesn’t support images, so searching for pictures isn’t possible using this service. Unfortunately, the newly launched Mobile Web option is not available on WML phones.

PC Makers Snub Windows XP N

Saturday 18 June 2005 @ 5:35 pm

Last 2 weeks, I’ve blogged a little about Microsoft Corp. released Windows® XP Home Edition N and Windows XP Professional N, the two versions of the Windows operating system created as part of the company’s compliance with the European Commission’s decision as part of its antitrust remedy of March 2004.

Unfortunately, four major PC makers have no plans to sell the media-player-free version of Windows due to lack of customer demand. They are Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lenovo and Fujitsu Siemens.

Java Flaws Open Door To Hackers

Friday 17 June 2005 @ 12:51 pm

Sun Microsystems announced on Tuesday, June 14, 2005, has fixed a pair of security bugs in Java that could be exploited by attackers to take over computers running Windows, Linux and Solaris (almost all kinds of OS :-O ).

The flaws are “highly critical” security monitoring company Secunia said in an advisory posted Tuesday.

Quoted:
Both flaws affect the Java Runtime Environment, or JRE. This is the Java software many computer users have on their system to run Java applications. The bugs could allow a Java application to read and write files or execute applications on a victim’s computer, Sun said in two separate security advisories released Monday.
